State Rep. Shirkey Assistance House Majority...

JACKSON, MI – State Rep. Mike Shirkey, who was chosen as the assistant House majority floor leader Thursday afternoon, said he will encourage “robust” debates.

Shirkey, R-Clark Lake, will also receive committee assignments for the new legislative session; those assignments have not been announced yet.

"As an assistant majority floor leader, I will encourage robust debate and discussion on the important issues facing Michigan residents," he said in a statement.

"We will also continue to ensure that decorum and respect are exhibited on the floor."

During the 2013-2014 legislative session Shirkey will help direct operations, which includes directing the House agenda and evaluating caucus positions.

“It's a tremendous honor to be selected in a leadership role as we enter a pivotal time for the state of Michigan,” Shirkey said. “We are headed in the right direction, but much more can be done at the Capitol to help put people back to work. Improving our economy must remain our number one priority, and we will continue to advocate for policies that allow job growth to flourish. "

First elected in 2010, Shirkey will start his second term in January. He is vice chair of the House Energy and Technology Committee, and serves on the Commerce Committee, Health Policy Committee and Regulatory Reform Committee.
